But with numerous trade schools to select from, just how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will get the extensive training required to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the error of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important factors when evaluating vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are offered as well as the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Hempstead NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Hempstead NY students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Hempstead NY trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Hempstead NY area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Hempstead NY area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Hempstead NY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Hempstead NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Hempstead NY area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Hempstead NY company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hempstead NY, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Hempstead, New York

The Town of Hempstead is one of the three towns in Nassau County, New York, United States, occupying the southwestern part of the county, in the western half of Long Island. Twenty-two incorporated villages (one of which is named Hempstead) are completely or partially within the town. The town's combined population was 759,757 at the 2010 census, which is the majority of the population of the county and by far the largest of any town in New York.

If Hempstead were to be incorporated as a city, it would be the second-largest city in New York, behind New York City; it is more than three times the size of Buffalo, which has long been the state's second-largest city. It would be the 18th-largest city in the country, behind Charlotte, North Carolina and ahead of Seattle, Washington. Hempstead is also the most populous municipality in the New York metropolitan area outside New York City.

The town was first settled around 1644 following the establishment of a treaty between English colonists, John Carman and Robert Fordham, and the Lenape Indians in 1643. Although the settlers were from the English colony of Connecticut, a patent was issued by the government of New Netherland after the settlers had purchased land from the local natives. This transaction is depicted in a mural in the Hempstead Village Hall, reproduced from a poster commemorating the 300th anniversary of Hempstead Village.
