However with numerous vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about identifying the ideal one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will obtain the comprehensive training needed to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the availability of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Sawyer ND student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Sawyer ND students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Sawyer ND trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Sawyer ND area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Sawyer ND area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Sawyer ND is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Sawyer ND area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Sawyer ND area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Sawyer ND contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in North Dakota and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Sawyer ND, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
