Learning a Vocation Online

Marcellus NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Marcellus NY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Marcellus NY trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Marcellus NY area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Marcellus NY area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Marcellus NY is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Marcellus NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Marcellus NY area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Marcellus NY company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Marcellus NY, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
