However with numerous trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of selecting a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they may gravitate to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Leeds NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Leeds NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Leeds NY trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Leeds NY area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Leeds NY area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Leeds NY is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Leeds NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Leeds NY area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Leeds NY company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Leeds NY, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
