Online Trade Schools

Andover NY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Andover NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Andover NY trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Andover NY area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Andover NY area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Andover NY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Andover NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Andover NY area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Andover NY contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Andover NY, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
