Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of potential students make the mistake of selecting a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are significant factors when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Additional variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available including the accessibility of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Westphalia KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Westphalia KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Westphalia KS trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Westphalia KS area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Westphalia KS area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Westphalia KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Westphalia KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Westphalia KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Westphalia KS contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Westphalia KS, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
