Learning a Trade Online

Wetmore KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Wetmore KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Wetmore KS trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Wetmore KS area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Wetmore KS area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Wetmore KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Wetmore KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Wetmore KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wetmore KS contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Wetmore KS, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
