Learning a Trade Online

Westmoreland KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Westmoreland KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Westmoreland KS trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Westmoreland KS area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Westmoreland KS area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Westmoreland KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Westmoreland KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Westmoreland KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Westmoreland KS company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Westmoreland KS, verify that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
