Online Trade Schools

Valley Grove WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Valley Grove WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Valley Grove WV trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Valley Grove WV area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Valley Grove WV area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Valley Grove WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Valley Grove WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Valley Grove WV area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Valley Grove WV company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Valley Grove WV, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
