new skills training sign Ona WVChoosing to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Ona WV are important decisions that will profoundly affect your future career. However with so many vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will receive the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Or they may gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover several of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Ona WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Ona WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Ona WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Ona WV area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Ona WV area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Ona WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Ona WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Ona WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Ona WV company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Ona WV, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
