However with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach identifying the ideal one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of students make the error of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others might be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant factors when analyzing trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review a few of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Saluda VA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Saluda VA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Saluda VA trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Saluda VA area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Saluda VA area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Saluda VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Saluda VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Saluda VA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Saluda VA company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Saluda VA, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

The Middlesex County Courthouse was built in 1850–1874 by architects William R. Jones and John P. Hill, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.[3] A new courthouse complex was built in 2003–2004, but its opening was stalled due to various construction problems, leading to a legal dispute between the County board and the contractor. It was eventually opened in 2007.

An even older notable building is Christ Church. The highly decorated Marine, veteran of the Banana Wars, World War II and the Korean War, Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller was raised in Saluda. He died in Hampton, Virginia in 1971, and was buried in historic Christ Church's Cemetery near Saluda.
