Learning a Vocation Online

Mitchells VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Mitchells VA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Mitchells VA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Mitchells VA area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Mitchells VA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Mitchells VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Mitchells VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Mitchells VA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Mitchells VA contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mitchells VA, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
