Learning a Trade Online

Disputanta VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Disputanta VA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Disputanta VA trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Disputanta VA area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Disputanta VA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Disputanta VA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Disputanta VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Disputanta VA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Disputanta VA contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Disputanta VA, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Disputanta, Virginia

Disputanta is an unincorporated community in Prince George County, Virginia, United States in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The postal ZIP Code of Disputanta, Virginia is 23842.

Popular legend has it that William Mahone (1826–1895), builder of the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad (now part of the Norfolk Southern railway), and his cultured wife, Otelia Butler Mahone (1837–1911), traveled along the newly completed Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad naming stations. Otelia was reading Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. From his historical Scottish novels, Otelia chose the place names of Wakefield as well as Windsor and Waverly. She tapped the Scottish Clan "McIvor" for the name of Ivor, a small town in neighboring Southampton County.[2]

As they continued west, they reached a station just west of the Sussex County line in Prince George County where they could not agree on a suitable name from the books. Instead, they became creative, and invented a new name in honor of their dispute. This is how the tiny community of Disputanta was named.[3]
