Learning a Trade Online

Ruckersville VA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Ruckersville VA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Ruckersville VA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Ruckersville VA area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Ruckersville VA area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Ruckersville VA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Ruckersville VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Ruckersville VA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Ruckersville VA contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Ruckersville VA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
