Learning a Trade Online

Zelienople PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Zelienople PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Zelienople PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Zelienople PA area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Zelienople PA area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Zelienople PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Zelienople PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Zelienople PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Zelienople PA contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Zelienople PA, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
