However with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will get the extensive training required to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the error of enrolling in a trade school simply because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are critical factors when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Belleville PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Belleville PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Belleville PA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Belleville PA area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Belleville PA area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Belleville PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Belleville PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Belleville PA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Belleville PA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Belleville PA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
