However with so many trade schools to pick from, just how do you go about finding the best one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will get the complete training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the error of selecting a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover several of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Wyncote PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Wyncote PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Wyncote PA trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Wyncote PA area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Wyncote PA area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Wyncote PA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Wyncote PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Wyncote PA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wyncote PA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Wyncote PA, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
