Trade Schools Online

Reynoldsville PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Reynoldsville PA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Reynoldsville PA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Reynoldsville PA area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Reynoldsville PA area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Reynoldsville PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Reynoldsville PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Reynoldsville PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Reynoldsville PA company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Reynoldsville PA, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
