Learning a Trade Online

Wellersburg PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Wellersburg PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Wellersburg PA trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Wellersburg PA area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Wellersburg PA area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Wellersburg PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Wellersburg PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Wellersburg PA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Wellersburg PA contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Wellersburg PA, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
