Not only do you need to confirm that you will receive the complete training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Others might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the availability of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Trexlertown PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Trexlertown PA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Trexlertown PA trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Trexlertown PA area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Trexlertown PA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Trexlertown PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Trexlertown PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Trexlertown PA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Trexlertown PA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Trexlertown PA, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
