Online Trade Schools

Narberth PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Narberth PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Narberth PA trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Narberth PA area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Narberth PA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Narberth PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Narberth PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Narberth PA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Narberth PA company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Narberth PA, verify that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
