Learning a Vocation Online

Lemont PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Lemont PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Lemont PA trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Lemont PA area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Lemont PA area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Lemont PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Lemont PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Lemont PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Lemont PA company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Lemont PA, check that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
