new skills training sign Roscommon MIDeciding to work in a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Roscommon MI are serious decisions that will greatly impact your long term career. However with numerous trade schools to select from, just how do you approach identifying the ideal one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will receive the extensive training required to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are significant considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they can not be the only ones. Added variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Roscommon MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Roscommon MI students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Roscommon MI trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Roscommon MI area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Roscommon MI area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Roscommon MI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Roscommon MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Roscommon MI area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Roscommon MI contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Roscommon MI, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
