Online Trade Schools

Skandia MI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Skandia MI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Skandia MI trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Skandia MI area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Skandia MI area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Skandia MI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Skandia MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Skandia MI area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Skandia MI company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Skandia MI, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
