Learning a Trade Online

Galien MI student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Galien MI students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Galien MI trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Galien MI area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Galien MI area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Galien MI is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Galien MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Galien MI area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Galien MI company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Galien MI, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

    Galien, Michigan

Galien (guh-LEEN)[citation needed] is a village in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 549 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Galien Township. The village provides its own sewer utility.

The founder of the village of Galien was George A. Blakeslee. Born in Pennsylvania, he came to Galien Township in 1853. He platted Galien village in 1861, and it was incorporated in 1879. The village straddled a fairly new Michigan Central Railroad completed in 1849 from New Buffalo to Detroit. Blakeslee operated a sawmill at the site of present-day Galien, and established a general store. He purchased several thousand acres in the vicinity of the village and harvested the timber for his sawmill operation. For many years after Galien was established, he was president of the village, postmaster, justice of the peace, member of the school board and later World Bishop of the Latter Day Saint's Church.[6] Blakeslee Street was named after him{https://www.berriencounty.org/DocumentCenter/View/273/Galien-Village-PDF} and is located in the SE quadrant of the city plat.

On July 21, 1971, fire broke out in a hardware store in downtown Galien and destroyed that building as well as a restaurant and a beauty salon adjacent to it.[7] Another fire on October 18, 1971, extensively damaged a nearby IGA supermarket.[8] Between the two fires in one year, the northeast corner of the business district was destroyed.
