Learning a Trade Online

Hubbardston MI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Hubbardston MI students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Hubbardston MI trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Hubbardston MI area and all over the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Hubbardston MI area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Hubbardston MI is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Hubbardston MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Hubbardston MI area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Hubbardston MI contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hubbardston MI, check that the programs you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
