Learning a Trade Online

Jackson KY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Jackson KY students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Jackson KY trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Jackson KY area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Jackson KY area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Jackson KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Jackson KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Jackson KY area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Jackson KY contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Jackson KY, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Jackson, Kentucky

Upon the creation of Breathitt County in 1839, local landowner Simon Cockrell Sr. donated 10 acres (4.0 ha) to serve as its seat of government. The community was originally known as Breathitt, Breathitt Town, or Breathitt Court House after the county, but upon its incorporation as a city by the state legislature in 1843,[4] it was renamed Jackson to honor the recently deceased former president Andrew Jackson.[5][6]

Local feuds led the national press to publish stories about Jackson and "Bloody Breathitt": state troops were dispatched twice in the 1870s and again in 1903 – after the assassination of U.S. Commissioner James B. Marcum on the courthouse steps[7] – to restore order.[6]

Jackson is located at 37°33′11″N 83°23′18″W / 37.55306°N 83.38833°W / 37.55306; -83.38833 (37.553012, -83.388249).[8] The city is nestled in the heart of the Cumberland Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains, with the downtown located on the north bank of the North Fork of the Kentucky River. To limit flooding, the Kentucky River was redirected in 1963 by way of a small cut-through through the mountain, and its former channel, a river meander, was left behind as Panbowl Lake, now a prime attraction for fishermen.[6]
