Not only do you need to make sure that you will obtain the extensive training required to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are significant considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Other factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Ewing KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Ewing KY students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Ewing KY trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Ewing KY area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Ewing KY area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Ewing KY is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Ewing KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Ewing KY area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Ewing KY contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Ewing KY, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
