But with so many vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach identifying the best one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Other considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Crockett KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Crockett KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Crockett KY trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Crockett KY area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Crockett KY area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Crockett KY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Crockett KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Crockett KY area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Crockett KY contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Crockett KY, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Davy Crockett

David Crockett (August 17, 1786 – March 6, 1836) was an American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier, and politician. He is commonly referred to in popular culture by the epithet "King of the Wild Frontier". He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Texas Revolution.

Crockett grew up in East Tennessee, where he gained a reputation for hunting and storytelling. He was made a colonel in the militia of Lawrence County, Tennessee and was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. In 1827, he was elected to the U.S. Congress where he vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, especially the Indian Removal Act. Crockett's opposition to Jackson's policies led to his defeat in the 1831 elections. He was re-elected in 1833, then narrowly lost in 1835, prompting his angry departure to Texas (then the Mexican state of Tejas) shortly thereafter. In early 1836, he took part in the Texas Revolution and was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in March.

Crockett became famous during his lifetime for larger-than-life exploits popularized by stage plays and almanacs. After his death, he continued to be credited with acts of mythical proportion. These led in the 20th century to television and movie portrayals, and he became one of the best-known American folk heroes.[1][2]
