Online Trade Schools

Cerulean KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Cerulean KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Cerulean KY trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Cerulean KY area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Cerulean KY area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Cerulean KY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Cerulean KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Cerulean KY area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Cerulean KY contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Cerulean KY, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
