But with so many trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach locating the ideal one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will receive the complete training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the error of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others might be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added factors including reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Burgin KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Burgin KY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Burgin KY trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Burgin KY area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Burgin KY area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Burgin KY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Burgin KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Burgin KY area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Burgin KY company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Burgin KY, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
