However with numerous trade schools to select from, exactly how do you go about identifying the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will receive the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover several of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Alexandria KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Alexandria KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Alexandria KY trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Alexandria KY area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Alexandria KY area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Alexandria KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Alexandria KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Alexandria KY area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Alexandria KY contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Alexandria KY, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Alexandria, Kentucky

Alexandria is a home rule-class city[2] in Campbell County, Kentucky, in the United States. Along with Newport, it is one of the dual seats of the county.[3] The population was 8,477 at the 2010 census.[4]

It is believed that the area that is now Alexandria was first settled by Frank Spilman and his family c. 1793.[5] The Spilman family was from King George County, Virginia, and they may have named their settlement after Alexandria, Virginia.[5] The family had begun developing and selling lots in the settlement by 1819,[5] the year the first post office was established. On February 22, 1834, Alexandria was formally established by an act of the state assembly.[6]

When the Kentucky General Assembly formed Kenton County from part of Campbell County in 1840, they moved Campbell's county seat from Newport to Alexandria, which was closer to the center of the redrawn county.[5] The citizens of Alexandria quickly constructed a county courthouse but, because the majority of the county's population lived in Newport, the move was not a popular one and it took a court order and a visit from the sheriff to get the county clerk to move.[7]
