Online Trade Schools

Winfield KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Winfield KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Winfield KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Winfield KS area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Winfield KS area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Winfield KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Winfield KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Winfield KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Winfield KS contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Winfield KS, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
