Vocational Schools Online

Stockton KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Stockton KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Stockton KS trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Stockton KS area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Stockton KS area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Stockton KS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Stockton KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Stockton KS area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Stockton KS contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Stockton KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
