Online Trade Schools

Hepler KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Hepler KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Hepler KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Hepler KS area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Hepler KS area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Hepler KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Hepler KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Hepler KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Hepler KS contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Hepler KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
