Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Others may gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are critical considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will address a few of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Bentley KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Bentley KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Bentley KS trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Bentley KS area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Bentley KS area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Bentley KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Bentley KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Bentley KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Bentley KS company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Bentley KS, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
