However with so many vocational schools to select from, exactly how do you go about locating the ideal one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the complete training required to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are important considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Other variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Natoma KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Natoma KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Natoma KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Natoma KS area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Natoma KS area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Natoma KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Natoma KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Natoma KS area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Natoma KS contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Natoma KS, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
