Learning a Vocation Online

Gardner KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Gardner KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Gardner KS trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Gardner KS area and all over the United States to select from. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Gardner KS area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Gardner KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Gardner KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Gardner KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Gardner KS contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Gardner KS, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Gardner, Kansas

Gardner was founded where the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon/California Trails divided. The Santa Fe Trail sent travelers southwest through Sante Fe and Albuquerque toward Los Angeles and San Diego. The Oregon/California Trails bore west for a few miles before turning north toward the Kansas River valley, followed the Big Blue River into present-day Nebraska, followed the Platte River west, and ultimately split in present-day Wyoming, Idaho or Utah.[10]

Gardner was founded as a Free-Stater settlement in 1857. Settled primarily by emigrants from Massachusetts, it was named for Henry Gardner,[11] then governor of Massachusetts. Four years after its establishment, it became the first community in Johnson County — and perhaps the first in the state — to experience an attack by Confederate forces.[12]

    Gardner is located at 38°48′45″N 94°55′7″W / 38.81250°N 94.91861°W / 38.81250; -94.91861 (38.812367, -94.918621).[14] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.21 square miles (26.44 km2), of which 10.16 square miles (26.31 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.[2]
