Learning a Trade Online

Elk City KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Elk City KS students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online training, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Elk City KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Elk City KS area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Elk City KS area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Elk City KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Elk City KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Elk City KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Elk City KS contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Elk City KS, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
