However with so many trade schools to pick from, just how do you go about identifying the right one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will obtain the complete training needed to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Others might be attracted to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important factors when evaluating trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the vocation options that are available as well as the accessibility of online programs.

For example, maybe you have always had fun working on your car and have given thought to utilizing that ability to earn a living as a car mechanic. Or perhaps a family member has had a long and successful career in a particular vocation or trade and you would like to follow in her or his footsteps. Trade Schools Online

Lakeside CT student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Lakeside CT students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Lakeside CT trade schoolsWhen you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Lakeside CT area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Lakeside CT area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Lakeside CT is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Lakeside CT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Lakeside CT area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Lakeside CT contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Connecticut and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Lakeside CT, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
