Many potential students make the error of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Others might gravitate to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are significant factors when assessing vocational school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. We will cover a few of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Waterford CT student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Waterford CT students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online education, such as studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Waterford CT trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Waterford CT area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Waterford CT area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Waterford CT is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Waterford CT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Waterford CT area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Waterford CT contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Connecticut and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Waterford CT, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
