Learning a Vocation Online

Two Rivers WI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Two Rivers WI students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Two Rivers WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Two Rivers WI area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Two Rivers WI contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Two Rivers WI, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
