Online Trade Schools

Clam Lake WI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Clam Lake WI students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Clam Lake WI trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Clam Lake WI area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Clam Lake WI area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Clam Lake WI is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Clam Lake WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Clam Lake WI area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Clam Lake WI contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Clam Lake WI, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
