Learning a Trade Online

Black River Falls WI student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Black River Falls WI students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Black River Falls WI trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Black River Falls WI area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Black River Falls WI area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Black River Falls WI is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Black River Falls WI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Black River Falls WI area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Black River Falls WI company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Wisconsin and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Black River Falls WI, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

A large monument to Black River Falls' veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as to local Medal of Honor recipient Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., was erected near the Chamber of Commerce Building at 101 S. 2nd Street.
