Learning a Trade Online

Whitmer WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Whitmer WV students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Whitmer WV trade schoolsWhen you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Whitmer WV area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Whitmer WV area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Whitmer WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Whitmer WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Whitmer WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Whitmer WV contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Whitmer WV, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
