Online Trade Schools

Piedmont WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Piedmont WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Piedmont WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Piedmont WV area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Piedmont WV area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Piedmont WV is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Piedmont WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Piedmont WV area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Piedmont WV contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Piedmont WV, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
