But with numerous trade schools to choose from, exactly how do you undertake identifying the best one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will get the comprehensive training needed to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Additional factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will address a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Oceana WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Oceana WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Oceana WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Oceana WV area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Oceana WV area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Oceana WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Oceana WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Oceana WV area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Oceana WV company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Oceana WV, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
