Vocational Schools Online

Lavalette WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Lavalette WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Lavalette WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Lavalette WV area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Lavalette WV area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Lavalette WV is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Lavalette WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Lavalette WV area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Lavalette WV contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Lavalette WV, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
