Trade Schools Online

Hendricks WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Hendricks WV students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Hendricks WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many trade schools in the  Hendricks WV area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Hendricks WV area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Hendricks WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Hendricks WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Hendricks WV area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Hendricks WV company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hendricks WV, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
