Or they may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Harts WV student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Harts WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Harts WV trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Harts WV area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Harts WV area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Harts WV is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Harts WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Harts WV area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Harts WV contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Harts WV, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
